We have been very fortunate as a church in that we have seen God heal significant illnesses miraculously.

Our stories of healing:

P & his thyroid disease

Recently we saw God heal a member of our congregation, P, of a significant illness. P had been losing weight and feeling very unwell and was diagnosed by his GP as having hyperthyroidism. His illness required long-term treatment with toxic medication, that would damage his thyroid, so stopping the excessive release of thyroid hormone into his body. Despite this treatment, P was still feeling unwell and his bloodtests showed only limited improvement.

On one ocasion, P left his medication behind while travelling overseas. After a few days he was feeling very unwell and was very (very) glad to go back on treatment.

One evening, as we were praying together, we sensed God wished to heal P. We asked God to heal P. Afterwards P was feeling much better and was convinced that his body was healed. We encouraged P to speak to his GP for advice.

His GP was happy for him to have a trial off  medication, followed by bloodtests for his thyroid a month later. P remained well, with no ill effects of stopping treatment. His blood tests for thyroid were perfect. P has remained completely well since then, without further need for treatment.

Justin & his low back pain

Justin had struggled with grumbling long-term low back pain (the back, not Justin grumbling!). There had been episodes when Justin had struggled to move, with severe back spasms. But mostly the back pain had been an irritation that made it difficult to sit still for long periods. Justin had become accustomed to living with the pain.

While attending a healing conference, participants were encouraged to pray for each other for healing for physical problems. Immediately after someone prayed for Justin, asking Jesus to heal his back, his back felt better. This started with a warm sensation, followed by a feeling of the back tightening. To Justin’s great joy his back continued to be pain-free. Instead of pain and stiffness after sitting for a time or driving, his back has remained pain-free.

A theology (what the Bible teaches about God) of healing

The message of the good news is that God’s desire is to heal this world. Salvation is God’s answer to each person’s greatest need. Firstly it is God’s cure for the warpedness, the evil hidden in each of our hearts. It is also God’s cure for our separation from Him, bringing us back to Him.

God’s love brings healing in our hearts and in relationship with Him. It also overflows in healing relationships with others, in marriages, families and communities.

God is the enemy of all evil. Jesus lived a perfect life, revealing a perfect picture of the nature of God.  His friend Peter said of Jesus “He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”  Jesus regularly healed those whose bodies were broken or diseased. Jesus trained His disciples to similarly reveal God’s desire to bring healing in this world and they healed the sick.

Believers and leaders are encouraged in the New Testament to pray for the sick for healing. God does not change and loves to heal.

This does not remove our responsibility to seek Him and His purpose in this world. We are convinced of God’s desire to heal the sick today and regularly pray for those who are not well.

Medical & Miraculous Healing

God made our body with the ability to heal itself. Much of medical care is to work alongside the natural miracle of the human body in bringing healing. We thank God for both our bodies as well as medical treatment. But we also know that God is able to overwhelm the natural laws of this universe and bring naturally impossible or rapid healings.

We have been privileged to see friends healed of blindness, deafness and incurable disease instantaneously. We have also seen others healed from emotional trauma and broken hearts.

Sometimes their healing was rapid and sometimes slow. Sometimes there is no evidence of healing. Knowing the goodness of God we continue to pray and entrust ourselves to Him and His love.

Our responsibility is to seek God for His work in our lives. Healing is one of the benefits released through the cross by Jesus laying down His life for us.  This more than anything reveals God’s love for us. (Romans 8 verses 31-39) and gives us confidence to seek Him (Hebrews 11 verse 6)

At our Sunday meetings we regularly pray for the sick.

Every Saturday we pray for the sick on the streets of Winchester. We do this in partnership with a number of other churches in Winchester as part of Healing on the Streets (HOTS).
