We meet regularly in homes in small groups called ‘home groups’. These are an important part of our life together as church. It is important to understand what the Bible teaches about the church.
The word ‘Church’ does not mean ‘a building with a spire’, or ‘a meeting on a Sunday morning.’ ‘Church’ is a word that means ‘God’s people together’.
The Bible uses many pictures to describe the church. These show how God wants us to live together as His people. Home groups are a place where we can live these biblical values.
The Bible teaches the church is the ‘Household of God’, those who are part of God’s family. We are included in God’s Family because of what Jesus has done. Like every family we share life together. N home groups we share joys, challenges and opportunities. We pray together, eat together and laugh a lot.
Another picture is of the church being a temple. God can never be contained by a building with stones and walls, but His people gathered together are a place to meet with God. We meet in home groups to enjoy meeting with God, worshipping Him in His goodness and honouring Jesus. We will often break bread and share wine as a picture of Jesus body broken for our benefit, to rescue us.
Another among the many pictures of a church is an army on a rescue mission. Home groups provide a safe place for people to heal, be restored and prepared for that mission. We take time to study the Bible and listen to God as we pray. We are always looking for a way to be a blessing in God’s world and home groups provide a good base for that mission.
